The Longcot Loop is a series of 20 caches along a 5 mile, flat circular trail in Oxfordshire. The outward leg, starts from the little church in the village of longcot and heads out across farmland to reach the village of Uffington, all the way there are great views of White Horse Hill and on a clear day you can just about make out the chalk horse carving. If you are looking for somewhere for lunch or just refreshment and fancy a small detour around or through Uffington, then you may like to consider The Fox & Hounds public house which situated on south east side of the village. This is a nice walk but it was quite hard going through the crops and a couple of overgrown paths. However, Dukies Dad the series owner has been very clear about this in his cache descriptions and has awarded a terrain rating of 3 out of 5 stars to a couple of them.
Much of the trail is across crop fields and on the outward section the farmer has maintained a narrow path through the rapeseed. It was in flower when I did the series this week, so I needed tread carefully so as not to end up dusted in yellow! On the return journey, Dukies Dad has given two caches, numbers 15 & 16 a three start terrain rating. This is due to the fact that at this time of year the footpath leading to them is overgrown and difficult to get through. Up until now, some of the footpaths clearly haven’t been used very often but I’m sure it won’t be long before they are re-established by fellow geocachers.
